This painting, "Answers Without Questions," is the most direct map I've ever made of my own mind. If you want to know what it feels like to have Asperger's cognition—that immediate, structural clarity—this is it.
The title says it all. This work is about the relief of instinctively knowing. For me, understanding often comes instantly through pattern recognition, without the need for the step-by-step inquiry that neurotypicals experience—the answer just arrives.
That central, blinding beam of magenta light is the Answer—an immediate, profound realisation that cuts through everything. It is intense, focused, and non-negotiable. In essence, this light represents a singular, undeniable truth.
Surrounding this, the large gothic arches and pillars, painted in dark reds and purples, illustrate the overwhelming complexity of sensory input and the immense volume of data my mind processes at once. Though chaotic, a hidden structure persists within the scene.
You can see all the complexity—all the architectural lines—converge on that central beam. In this way, the Asperger's mind is revealed: every detail is organised instantly around the truth. While the external world is messy, the internal pattern remains flawless.
At the base of that intense light, you might see a small, dark shape in the foreground on that deep blue path—that's me. I call that my Monk figure. After showing the broader structure, I wanted to include my own presence in the scene.
He processes information, receiving rather than searching. He is calm and focused—not asking questions, but staying still to receive the magenta light’s truth. He anchors the intense energy that comes with instant understanding.
To further express this experience, my signature style—the fragmented, tessellated technique—is deeply connected to my neurotype and helps communicate this clarity:
I don't blend colours smoothly because my mind organises information in discrete, intense blocks. Building the image from these fragments reveals how my pattern recognition fits countless inputs together into a resolved truth.
Beyond form, the colours are not realistic. Instead, they are filled with emotional and mental energy, especially the bright reds and magentas. This highlights the power, excitement, and passion that come with discovering a core truth. All this intense, focused energy is held within the structure of the mind.
"Answers Without Questions" is my way of celebrating this unique way of knowing. It is about the profound spiritual and mental clarity that does not need words or questions, but brings the truth straight to me.
